2024 Reads - First Quarter
Over the years, I have continued to successfully reach my reasonable Goodreads goal of two books a month. When I discovered last year that my local library hosts a monthly book club, I decided to join. I wasn’t able to attend every single month, nor have I enjoyed every book club read we’ve read, but it has allowed me to venture out of my normal reading genres.
I have started using a rating system, based off of Goodreads’ 5-star rating system, when discussing books with others.
1-star — did not enjoy, do not recommend
2-star — partially enjoyed, but would not recommend
3-star — enjoyed, would recommend to others based on interests
4-star or 5-star — greatly enjoyed, would definitely recommend
Have you had the chance to read for pleasure yet this year? Do you used Goodreads or another social cataloguing website or app? Leave a comment letting me know what you’re currently reading, what you’d like to read next, or what you’d think I might like to read. I’m constantly looking for new reading material!
1. The Loop by Jeremy Robert Johnson - 3-star - I randomly picked this off the shelf after quickly reading through the first few pages and having something immediately mysterious and horrifying capture my attention. It was a good reading start to the year. Would recommend this if you like the science fiction genre, Stranger Things, and small town secrets.
2. Yellowface by R. F. Kuang - 2-star - This was my first book club read, a book I could cross off my never ending “to be read” list, a book I was disappointed in. There was so much potential, but I felt it tried to cover too much at once and so, covered nothing at all. While I only enjoyed bits and pieces of the book, and greatly disliked the ending, it made for an interesting discussion about racism, the publishing industry, loneliness and depression, social media and its impacts, appropriation, amongst other hard to discuss subjects. It was a great introduction to a book club!
3. The Tattooist of Auschwitz by Heather Morris - 3-star - This was my second book club read and another book I was able to cross off my never ending TBR. It was a truly heartbreak yet heartwarming love story. Would recommend if you like historical World War II romance fiction based off a true story.
